The Miami Grand Prix was first held in 1959 on a temporary street circuit set up around the same downtown area that hosts the Miami Street Carnival today. This inaugural race was won by Sunday Times journalist and future Ferrari team manager, Ian Gillett. The event quickly grew in popularity, with world-famous drivers such as Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, and Stirling Moss competing in front of sell-out crowds. By 1963, the race had outgrown its downtown location and moved to a much larger site on Biscayne Boulevard near what is now Miami International Airport.

A number of changes were made to the circuit over this period, including the addition of a chicane at Turn 1 in 1975 which slowed the cars down for safety reasons. These changes failed to arrest falling attendance figures and after years of financial losses, the Miami Grand Prix was dropped from the Formula One calendar following the 1995 season.
In recent years there has been growing speculation that Formula One racing could return to Miami in the future. In October 2017 it was announced that Liberty Media –the current owners of Formula One– had signed a Letter of Intent with local promotersMiami GP LLC with a view to holding a race on a proposed street circuit in Downtown Miami from October 2019 onwards. However, no further progress has been made on this project and it remains unclear if or when a Miami Grand Prix will take place in future years.
